Meet Bumpy
On 2 May 2026, the Kenya Wildlife Service team received reports of an infant orphaned hippo at Oloiden Resort in Naivasha. They found a pint-sized calf nestled beside his mother's lifeless body — calling out, nudging her with his blunt little nose, hoping for a response.
The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust took him in, wrapped him in a cherry-red blanket, and named him Bumpy. He spent his first night at the Nairobi Nursery, snuggled into Keeper Simon's arm, finally at peace.
Today, Bumpy lives at the Kaluku Unit with his very own pool, a bean bag he adores, and Keepers who never leave his side. He follows them around like a shadow, grunting noisily with every step.
